Not now, Bernard 'Monster' Redesign

2022

Research

I redesigned Monster from Not Now Bernard for an older audience, focusing on the idea that Monster represents Bernard’s emotional neglect and subsequent acting out for his parents' attention. Monster's destructive behaviour is a metaphor for a child’s cry for attention.

Targeting parents familiar with the 1980s setting, I aimed to show Monster not just as scary, but as a reflection of family struggles. I contrasted Bernard’s friendly look with sharper, more menacing features for Monster, using colour and style inspired by 70s cartoons.

This project allowed me to explore how design can tell a deeper story and connect emotionally with an audience.
